Abstract

The root growth of Corchorus capsularis (cv. CVL-1) and C. olitorius (cv. 0-4) grown in three soil types over a range of moisture regimes were examined. The length of the separate components of the root system (main lateral, 1st and 2nd laterals etc.) were determined as well as the number of branches and also the volume of root was recorded. At waterlogged (WL) condition CVL-1 showed significantly (P = 0-05) higher total root length, root volume and number of laterals than 0-4 in all soil types. In general the bottom portion of root of 0-4 was rotten in all soil types. Both cultivars showed significantly (P = 0.05) higher total root length, root volume and number of laterals at FC than dry treatments. 0-4 plauts produced significantly (P = 0.05) higher lateral roots at 20% moisture of FC than CVL-1 and ultimately showed maximum root volume in this treatment.
